Disc overview:

The Gateway Chief is an often overlooked Putt and Approach disc that has a truly unique feel and a solid flight. The Chief is a straight flier with a bit of low-speed stability that gets good distance for a 3-speed. What makes the Chief stand out is it's ultra-shallow profile that gives it a unique hand feel that could be a good option for a lot of throwers. So why don’t more players bag it?

The Gateway Chief is the perfect beginner straight-flying approach or throwing putter disc golf disc with flight numbers of 3/3/0/1. The chief has an ultra-low profile, meaning it feels “thin” in the hand compared to pretty much any other disc I have tried. This disc is perfect for people with smaller or average-sized hands. For me, the Chief was instantly comfortable; I felt like I could put it exactly where I wanted it from the first time I threw it. As a beginner, the confidence the Gateway Chief gave me has had a lasting impact on my game. To this day, my approach game is my strongest skill on the course. The Chief is also a board flat disc, that still maintains a solid glide ( 3 glide seems to be accurate). It is one of the most unique feeling putters on the market, and I have yet to find anyone who doesn’t like how it feels as a throwing putter.

How does it fly?

The Chief is just an extremely easy disc to throw well. Put it out on flat; it has surprising glide, sneaky distance, and a small fade at the end. This is one of the first discs I purchased after my starter set, and after over a year of weekly use, the disc has barely lost a tick of stability, and the plastic still looks/feels great. This disc is a better Axiom Envy for beginners because it has some fade, but not enough that it will hyzer out too early for beginners. Throw it with a touch of anhyzer, and you can even get a baby flex line to hit specific gaps.

The Chief is a relatively forgiving disc, as it does not punish small mistakes, instead, it maintains a stable flight with most release angles. Its amazing hand feel means you get consistent releases backhand and forehand. Of all the discs in my bag, I have the most confidence in the Chief to follow my intended line.  If your release angle is a little off, the Chief doesn’t punish you harshly; however, it does reward you with its best flight when you nail a flat release. For this reason, this is my most trusted disc for shorter tunnel shots and tight gaps. This disc can get you a surprising amount of distance as a beginner and may be an excellent alternative to a mid-range when you first start playing.

Conclusion:

Overall, I cannot say enough about this disc. It is inexpensive, comes in great plastic, and flies amazingly for beginners and intermediates. Bag one now!
